Rolling Hills has recently been named “The Richest Town in California” and one of the top ten “Safest Cities in California” according to 247wallst.com and Consumer Affairs, respectively. Due to it being centered atop the middle of the peninsula, many of its homes offer sweeping views of the Los Angeles basin, Catalina Island and the Pacific Ocean. Rolling Hills consists of a private, guard-gated community and maintains a ranch style/equestrian environment with no traffic lights, multi-acre lots and ample space between homes. Homes are typically, one-story ranch houses, and are required to have white exterior paint. Each home site is required to maintain horse property on its lot, or at minimum dedicate land where stalls can be built.

The city is bordered by Rolling Hills Estates to the north and Rancho Palos Verdes on all other sides.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District serves Palos Verdes Estates, Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates. As of 2017, Niche.com ranks PVPUS as the #5 ranked Best School District in California.
